The Story
Prior to 1937, Neenah citizens swam in Lake Winnebago or the Fox River. The algae in the lake made swimming unacceptable for many residents. At this time, the idea for constructing a public pool in Neenah was increasing with importance. The original estimate for the construction of this pool was about $140,000. Luckily, two Neenah citizens were willing to donate money and the land for this pool. The pool, located on South Park Avenue, was finally opened to the public in 1940, with Ole Jorgenson as the pool supervisor. In 1942, the pool received widespread recognition as it hosted the Women’s National AAU Swimming and Diving Championships. In 1991, the pool was in need of substantial repairs so potential upgrades for the pool were discussed. A new pool was constructed in the same location and reopened in 1994. The Neenah pool is an significant city facility that has been teaching thousands to swim and providing fun for families for over 70 years.
